A Chanceful Meeting by BATTLEFAIRIES A Chanceful Meeting by BATTLEFAIRIES
Something to set the mood for a particular scene I had in mind; for my D&D campaign, so NO ASKING WHO THIS GUY IS. Spoilers.
Maybe the scene will take place, maybe not - that's how it is with these games. Since I haven't uploaded any pictures in a long time, however, I won't keep this one from you.

Ooo nice atmosphere. I like the range of values in this, lends a lot of depth to the scene along with the excellent detailing on the rocks in front. The one thing that's throwing me is the fire (or whatever that is on the cloak - looks like fire :O) doesn't appear to be acting as a very strong source of light - I see a few highlights, but considering how much there is, I'd expect more on the rocks.

If you were ever going to do a new version of this picture, I'd say go even more extreme with the effects. Have the perspective be fully from the ground, so there's a much more dramatic foreground/background effect. And expand the range of values to bring in some full whites/blacks. Granted that would shift the mood a bit, so maybe that isn't what you were looking for P:

I'm very glad you noticed the rocks; those were fun to paint even if a bit tricky.
You're right about the fire/values, of course - if I get around to going back in again, I'll make sure to address that.

Thank you for the thorough critique!

Amazing mood and values! I like the atmosphere of the whole piece- although I don't know if it's just my screen, but the mantle and light zones look a little dull. I would push the values a little further there. But I'm very impressed with the look of the ground and sky, and I'm now very curious about he character :XD: Ahhhhhh can't ask for spoilers! :P

DA has a history of messing with my values, but I think I may indeed have understated that glow of the fire too much.

Have you ever noticed Photoshop not displaying the full range of values very well? Maybe it's just me, but I've had some immense problems with shading the darker parts of another b&w picture of mine: I could only tell if I'd done it right after I saved the file as a jpeg and looked at it that way. It hasn't been as much of a problem since, but I've taken to painting lighter and then adjusting levels after everything is fully shaded, just so I wouldn't have to shade areas that are too dark again.

Never say an artist doesn't suffer for their craft...

Aw that sounds terrible :/ I had dA making my pencil drawings blurred and dirty but hopefully I managed to fix that once I got to see how they looked on different screens.
I'm not sure about photoshop, could it be that you're using some particular colour profile that messes up your values? :O

The atmosphere is superb, despite the B/W the heat of that fire comes out clearly and there's something strangely cold as well.
The pose, pheraps. he looks calm, almost indifferent.

Very well done, love it.
